Organic Gardening

Eating organic food is our most direct link to the environment, and it is becoming a necessity to many people today. We are finding that the chemical fertilizers, additives, preservatives, pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones being added to our foods, are making us sick. In today's world we can't even be sure of what's in our foods. The best way to know what you are eating is to grow your own, organically. If this is not possible, and for the foods you can't grow, buy organic and natural foods. Our local grocery stores are starting to see the need for this and are slowly changing over. We also have some great natural food stores here. If you're not sure what an ingredient is - ask! Then if you're still not sure, wait to purchase that product until you have time to research it. Our bodies are as healthy as the foods we put in them.

We haven't found a lot of local resources for organic gardening for the home gardener.  The local nurseries are showing an interest in supplying more organic and natural products.  They are starting to carry fungicides and pesticides that are "greener" than the chemical solutions.  Ask them what they have for organic and natural solutions, then stay strong in your choice of environmentally safe gardening. (If you know of any one we've missed locally as an organic resource, please let us know at info@gpei.org.)

We have linked to sites that will help you get started with your garden, answer any questions you may have and encourage you along the way:

This is the Organic Gardening Magazine site that will help you get started - they have an extensive site on just about every aspect of organic gardening.  Clink on link and then growing techniques:  http://www.organicgardening.com

This site has good tips for your garden and many links to other sites  www.organicgardentips.com/

This is the Garden Web - a forum for finding answers or asking questions  forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/organic/

This is a comprehensive site for organic lawn care  www.organiclawncare101.com/tips.html

If you like to have your resources "at hand" there are many magazines and books.  Browse a local bookstore and find the ones that are right for you.
